After a bunch of time in Europe, I'm considering to move there for the foreseeable future as it seems like a place where life happens more obviously for me.

Back in Canada to do administrative things, I must confront choices about detaching: I'm comforted by the supports and amenities available to me in my family home, but I sense the city's culture makes me cynical and frustrated over the long-term. I try to avoid ranting about Toronto, but, as an example: it disturbs me that so many here aspire to buy the same SUV and custom home design with street names written on the house. Happy to know people here across the political spectrum who break out of this trend toward "sameness".

I might also end up on a longer than expected break from my capoeira group and movement training to sort myself out, which brings me to the arena of self-practice. Recent attempts to train kicks and handstands in the company of a chair have made me realize how much I've relied on group trainings to avoid conscious organizing and development—a sort of autopilot. Even though music instilled in me an understanding of how advantageous it is to practice between lessons, I chose to skip that with movement earlier this year to focus on projects, and just keep my body active with the group. Starting again has clarified a couple of broader reflections:

1. Individual practice without the intensity of group training may seem less "intense" or "focused" as you find your way, but it also takes extra energy to self-organize and adapt to make sessions possible in environments that are fluctuating, noisy, less private, not purpose-built, or adverse for other reasons.
2. Physical training, daily routines, and food choices can be spaces to practice building your path based on having a memory of what you did, which is a reflex in musical composition and improvisation.
3. Body connection is our desired "magnificent integration of all the things", with electricity built-in.
4. The cost of being sedentary for long periods is often invisible, and the forces bringing us there fuel this silent decay.

The administrative puzzle means I will be looking for work over the next year, partly to support myself, partly to prove in visa applications that I am worthy of existing in a new place. Although I've been focused on my own projects since 2020, I feel a hunger to be in service of those in my community; my capacity to encircle problems by creating friendly technical solutions, combined with my bent for communications, can meaningfully help an absurd number of people. Someone recently asked me how I ended up on my path, and it reminded me that both projects floating me financially for a decade were oriented towards serving: AudioScrub gave musicians new repertoire and skills; note the sound freed up venue owners to spend time on their business while their social media was handled well. Growing up, I found reading a challenge because my mind would wander. I used to hope humans would invent more efficient forms of ingesting information (like video explainers or interactive experiences). I'm glad to not think that way anymore and for many years have maintained the belief that books are the greatest technology humans have invented.

Although I aspire to go through them like Cookie Monster eats cookies, I'm not there yet, and thought to share some things that helped me along the way.

Since 2019, I list books I've read in my klog as it motivates me to read more; the name is from "book log" in the way that blog is from "web log", but also has this nice whiff of "cramming stuff into your brain". Sometimes it felt superficial, but I tried to stay conscious of why I'm reading and it's generally been useful.

Since maybe 2009, I've taking notes on readings. I actually used to write out quotes by hand until going digital in 2019 and at some point will incorporate them into my klog.

Some part of me naively hopes to eliminate reading more than once if I've taken the right notes, capturing ideas forever and making it easier to either remember or find, but that probably doesn't happen as imagined.

I try to paraphrase in my own words wherever possible as it helps me to clarify what is communicated. Sometimes the author says it better, sometimes I can, but the focus is to note what's meaningful for me.

Recently, I've linked each klog entry to my quotes and paraphrases (inspired by Derek Sivers' book notes page).

I also note books I skip because that's part of reading too and it provides a useful indicator of what someone with my perspective finds relevant.

This came after a long phase of feeling forced to read every word from start to finish, probably by some idea that I should be able to read and understand anything. My reading progress would stall when I landed on something uninteresting, and some imaginary academic finger would wag to guilt me into ingesting IMPORTANT CANON. But one of Nassim Nicholas Taleb's books snapped me out of it, and instilled morefreedom to go in and out of various books, to not finish.

I would finish by saying that a large part of what helped me read more is simply having a different mindset.

Last year I encountered a list in Portuguese called "rights of the reader", which seems to be paraphrased and translated from a book by Daniel Pennac; there's even an illustrated PDF of the list.

Foreign news wants to tell us with whom and where we should fight, trade or sympathize[, but] these three areas of interest really aren't priorities for the majority of us.

A journalistic gaffe is something a powerful person inadvertently says or does in a momentary lapse which (as everyone knows) in no way reflects their considered views and yet which the news seizes upon and refuses to let go of, insisting that the gaffe must be an indicator of a deep and shameful truth.

We should at least be somewhat suspicious of the way that news sources, which otherwise expend considerable energy advertising their originality and independence of mind, seem so often to be in complete agreement on the momentous question of what happened today.

As currently structured, the news does not 'see' the property developer who condemns thousands of people to live in humiliating environments but who nevertheless breaks no laws and steals no money. The most assiduous reporter concerned with fraud won't be able to put a finger on anyone criminally responsible for the commercial messages that subtly erode the dignity and intelligence of public life or find anyone who can be arrested for a decline in politeness or respect between the sexes.

The status quo could confidently remain forever undisturbed by a flood of, rather than a ban on, news.

The news knows how to render its own mechanics almost invisible and therefore hard to question. It speaks to us in a natural unaccented voice, without reference to its own assumption-laden perspective. It fails to disclose that it does not merely report on the world, but is instead constantly at work crafting a new planet in our minds in line with its own often highly distinctive priorities.
